What is Wineberry? What does the name mean?

A wineberry is a little gem of a raspberry that grows wild around Loudoun County. Though not native to the area, wineberries are beloved by foragers and were a staple of my childhood.

Additionally, Wineberry is based in the Northern Virginia Wine region. We love to partner with local wineries on events, markets and wine pairings. Several Wineberry flavors feature wine - like our best selling Red Wine and Chocolate cake flavor.

Do you offer customization?

Yes, with limitations. I will not use artificial dyes or fondant since natural ingredients are at the foundation of Wineberry’s brand. However, I want to create your dream cake! If you have ideas that you don’t see on my website lets discuss them! I am happy to work with you to develop new flavors, designs and sizes that work for your event. Please ask about customization as early in the ordering process as possible!

What should I expect from natural colors?

Flavor. If you want a bright green cake the outer layer of buttercream will taste like matcha green tea. If you want a solid black cake you are in luck because it will taste like roasted cocoa. That being said, I will generally only use that brightly colored buttercream on the very outside. It will be a thin layer over top of white, or chocolate buttercream-whatever corresponds to the flavor of the cake within. I wouldn’t use a colorant that I considered to have a bad flavor but if you don’t like it, it will be easy to avoid.

Better behaved party guests. Artificial dyes like red #40 are linked to hyperactivity and inattention in children.

Potential health benefits. Artificial dyes are made from nasty chemicals like petroleum and coal ash. Not only do I avoid those dyes- the colorants that I use instead are believed to have health benefits! Turmeric is believed to prevent heart disease, Alzheimer's and cancer. Matcha is high in antioxidants that may help protect the liver and boost brain function. Beets have been associated with improved blood flow, lower blood pressure and increased exercise performance. To clarify- I am not selling health food. I use far too much sugar and butter to make such a claim. What I am saying is that my products are free of artificial ingredients and contain ingredients that some folks consume for health reasons- like matcha green tea.
